Two kinds of Gas Central Heating Systems are mainly in use; pumped/vented and sealed systems.
Pumped/vented systems are the ones that many homes have and they have the most components resulting in potentially higher maintenance costs. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System includes components known as a feed and expansion tank to allow for the expansion of water as it is heated in the central heating radiators. The hot water storage tank provides your home with warm water and brings heat to the heating radiators. The expansion tank has adequate space to accommodate any water expansion that occurs due to heat. A pumped/vented heating system requires that the tank be installed at the highest level within the house – such as an attic or attic space, certainly on the top floor. It performs dual functions by providing hot water and heating up the house.

A slightly newer, more up-to-date central heating boiler that many people are choosing over a pumped/vented Central Heating system is a sealed system. As the name suggests, sealed system is a closed system; no tank is required in this system. There are no tanks or pipework in the loft, the whole system is sealed, its unvented, which has its benefits:.
- There is no risk of pipes freezing in the loft as with older systems.
- There won’t be any repair work on the tank or pipes which will be in the attic for a pumped/vented system.
- Reduces the risk of leaking.
- The sealing of the system eliminates dirt buildup, air locking and corrosion that often troubles open vented systems.
- The main water pressure can easily be used to flush out a Sealed system for easy maintenance.
The sealed Central Heating system is a fully packaged system with all the controls and safety devices already in place. A sealed Central Heating System uses water that comes directly from the main water supply. The main water supply feeds the system immediately under pressure.
A pressure vessel containing compressed gas, which is kept separate from the sealed system by a diaphragm, is used to allow any pressure variations. Pressure buildup in a Sealed system can be relieved by a safety valve which drains out water; and pressure drop is compensated by automatic fresh intake of water via another valve.
As compared to other heating systems, Central Heating systems are cheaper to run. And they provide you with much more control and choice when it comes to your heating compared to any other systems.
