You will find pumped/vented systems in most homes at the moment. Heating systems using the pump or vent process are equipped with a tank to allow for feeding of replacement water and expansion of heated water. The hot water storage tank provides your home with warm water and brings heat to the radiators. The tank makes way for any water expansion that is caused by the heating process. The expansion tank is placed at highest spot to help create water pressure. It not only heats the house, but also supplies hot water.

A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. As the name indicates, a sealed system is a an enclosed system therefore no expansion water tanks are needed. There are no tanks or pipework in the attic, the whole system is sealed, its unvented, which has its benefits:.
- There is no chance of pipes freezing in the attic.
- There is no need to maintain the tanks and pipes as there are not present.
- Reduces the risk of leaking.
- As there are no open vents, air cannot enter into the system and so the risk of corrosion, airlocks and sludge is drastically decreased.
- It is possible to flush out the system if required by using the mains water supply.
The sealed Central Heating system is a fully packaged system with all the controls and safety devices already in place. No tank feeds a sealed system, the supply comes directly from the mains. The pressure of the main water supply benefits the hot water outlets and gives a healthy shower.
A pressure vessel containing tightly packed gas can allow a sealed system to have normal fluctuations of pressure; a diaphragm serves as a barrier between the gas and water in the sealed system. The pressure in a sealed Central Heating System is controlled by a valve that lets water out if the pressure becomes too high and opens to refill the system with water if the pressure gets too low.
Compared to any other form of heating, Gas Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. They also offer you all round control which is more than most heating systems do.
