Gear Up for the winter and update your central heating

As the cold winter approaches the nights get longer and the coldness creeps in, so we must all be prepared, and the best way to do this is via a central heating system. If you have an efficient and safe central heating system installed you will enjoy the benefits of a comfortable and snug home.

A gas central heating system is basically a gas boiler with pipes carrying the heat to heating radiators placed in all the rooms; these systems can be of the pumped or vented type.

Pumped systems are more everyday, they have a feed and an expansion tank, another hot water tank is the core of the system, it stores hot water as it heats up and then uses the pipes to transfer heat to the radiators. The expansion tank will always allow for any water expansion that may occur as it gets hot.

The other type of gas central heating consists of a sealed system, where as there is no expansion tank to the heating system. Water tanks are not required here because it is a closed system. The main assets of this system is that issues such as leaking and airlocks are minimised and, particularly for those who live in colder climates, pipes will not freeze.

So the question now is, why do we need central heating? Is it really needed?.

One of the greatest advantages of gas central heating is its capability to increase the temperature inside a home or office very quickly without creating any noticeable effects in the air immediately surrounding you. Before the central heating system came into existence, other heaters like electric and storage heaters were used to keep the home warm or even coal fires. But the main disadvantages with these, were that they made the air somewhat dry and hard, as well as letting off a slight smell.

These air quality issues were eliminated by central heating; but such a preferred environment can be ensured only by periodic servicing of the heating system to keep it running efficiently and safely. Many home owners turn them on immediately at the arrival of cold weather after leaving them off during the summer season, which is not the proper thing to do. It is more prudent to routinely switch on the system in autumn as winter approaches, so that any hitches can be repaired by summoning a gas central heating expert well in time.

Periodic flushing is very important for some types of gas central heating systems since they constantly suck dirt and air into them. The easiest way to do this is to gently open the valve and allow any water to fall into a bucket placed underneath.
